Obama Wanted To Open Relations With Iran in 2009

Barack Obama, the naïf, decided early in his Administration that the best way to deal with the Iranian government, the implacable enemies of the United States, was to treat them as friends; normalizing relations, reopening embassies. Why, surely the Iranians would be thrilled at having warm relations with the Great Satan, wouldn’t they? Who wouldn’t want to be Obama’s bestest friend?

The Iranians, that’s who. Even after at least two meetings with American diplomats, one as early as 2009 when Deputy Secretary of State William Burns met with chief Iranian nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili for an hour, the Iranians shockingly “opposed any sign of normalization with the US, and refused to grant a ‘prize’ to the Americans.”

Obama offered the opening of interest sections in Washington and Tehran, with the possibility that once that was established there would be full diplomatic ties, including US and Iranian embassies and ambassadors who could reside in Washington, D.C. and Tehran.

And still the Iranians rebuffed him and continued on their merry way to develop nuclear weapons that could be fed to terrorists around the world to harm the West and Israel.

Could there be any greater sign of weakness, capitulation and naivete by an American president?
